Longtime Arcadia resident Sherry Wang was recently selected as the Arcadia
Citizen of the Year during a recent awards ceremony hosted by the Arcadia
Chamber of Commerce.
“For three decades, Sherry Wang has led by example with grace, poise
and passion as a community volunteer and activist who kindly gives her
time to USC Arcadia Hospital and other community organizations to make
Arcadia an even better place to live,” said Chamber Vice President
Brian Greene, who also serves as the director of marketing at USC Arcadia
Hospital. “As Sherry receives the Arcadia Citizen of the Year Award
tonight, it’s actually all of us here in Arcadia who are honored
to have both Sherry and her husband Shone as residents of this great community.”
Sherry initially began volunteering at the hospital by serving on the hospital’s
Bioethics Committee and spearheaded development of educational training
for hospital staff to better understand the needs and cultural differences
when treating patients from the Chinese community. Eventually, Sherry
joined the Hospital Foundation Board of Directors and over time held numerous
leadership positions, including Chair of the Board in 2016.
For three years, Sherry co-chaired the hospital’s Mardi Gras event,
which raised $600,000 for the Foundation during her tenure. Sherry also
chaired the hospital’s annual Crystal Ball fundraising celebration,
and in 2018 she and husband Shone were honored for their leadership, philanthropy,
and dedication to the hospital. In addition, Sherry has been the driving
force behind the hospital’s annual Community Health Fair for 20
years, which provides hundreds of free health care services to those in
need and is a joint event with the Hsi Lai Temple in Hacienda Heights.
“Sherry and Shone have been loyal and generous donors through the
years and we are so grateful for everything they have helped make possible,”
said Michael Driebe, President of the USC Arcadia Hospital Foundation.
“Sherry is a tremendous advocate for our hospital, working quietly
behind the scenes to share the hospital’s story and build connections
with the community we serve. She has been especially helpful in reaching
out to the Chinese community here in the San Gabriel Valley.”
While numerous people throughout the community have lauded their wonderful
work, the Wangs remain humble and even mildly uncomfortable with the attention
generated for their volunteer and philanthropic efforts. “I never
expected to be honored or recognized for our efforts,” said Sherry.
“Service should be in everyone’s blood. It’s as simple
as opening a door for a pregnant woman; we should always show courtesy
to others.”
