Hip and Knee Center

When conservative measures are not effective, many patients choose to undergo a total joint replacement. The Methodist Hip and Knee Center is a dedicated program within the hospital that offers comprehensive evaluation and treatment of arthritis of the hip and knee.

Primary candidates are arthritic individuals with chronic joint pain that interferes with walking, exercise, leisure, recreation and work. The goal of the surgery is to relieve pain, restore independence and return you to work or daily activities. We educate our patients before their surgery and provide them with a 100-page guidebook full of questions and answers, exercises, instructions, tips - everything they need to know to fully recover and get them home quickly.

At the Methodist Hip and Knee Center, we take a unique "team" approach to joint replacement, in which a peer group of patients progresses from surgery to recovery simultaneously - each aiding and supporting the others. A new group of patients has surgery each week, and then works as a group through a four- to five-day process of recovery and discharge. This innovative program helps build bonds between patients, who become each other's support group. It promotes a feeling of family, where individuals can share stories and experiences with others who are facing similar challenges.

The joint replacement "team" at the Methodist Hip and Knee Center includes the patient and his or her "coach," other patients in the group, orthopedic surgeons, orthopedic nurses, certified physical and occupational therapists, the discharge planner and home care providers.

At the Methodist Hip and Knee Center, patients receive extremely personalized attention. Our program consistently receives high marks in terms of patient satisfaction, and it's easy to see why.

Rehabilitation Services

Our rehabilitation services offer an intensive regimen of therapy designed to help patients improve their self-care skills, mobility, communication and emotional adjustment. Our services are available for individuals who have suffered stroke or spinal cord injury, for amputees and for persons who have orthopedic, arthritic or other neurological conditions.

Sports Medicine Services

Methodist Hospital treats the full range of sports injuries, including muscle strains, knee sprains, overuse injuries, shoulder instability, tendonitis, fractures and dislocations, meniscus tears, and bursitis.

When necessary, our orthopedic specialists use arthroscopic (minimally invasive) and other surgical procedures to treat sports injuries that result either from repetitive motion or trauma.

Conservative measures always a priority

At Methodist Hospital, orthopedic services are about helping people achieve the highest level of function with as little pain as possible.

Some conservative measures that may prove effective include:
