Maternal Education Series 2012

Methodist Hospital offers a number of exciting educational programs that help families prepare for the arrival of a new baby and make important decisions. Each class offers unique information, so we encourage you to participate in as many classes as possible. For more information, please call our maternity education class line at 1-800-950-BABY.

Maternity Orientation & Tour (afternoon)

You are cordially invited to attend our maternity orientation and tour that will acquaint you with our services and staff. A brief presentation and tour will provide information needed as you prepare for your delivery and stay with us at Methodist Hospital. Please plan to attend early in your pregnancy. Please do not bring children to the tour.

Fee: Registration is not necessary

Maternity Orientation Tour (evening)

Big Brother & Big Sister Class (for siblings)

This special program for brothers- and sisters-to-be, ages 3 - 10 accompanied by parent, is designed to help prepare them for the arrival of the new family member. This class will discuss safety and holding and diapering the baby, as well as the emotions experienced by the siblings.

Fee: Pre-registration required; $10 for a parent accompanied by up to three children and $5 for each additional person delivering at Methodist Hospital; $15 for others.

Breastfeeding

A healthy, natural way to feed your baby, you’ll learn all the benefits of breastfeeding for baby and mom. Techniques for success: pumping and storage of milk, weaning and preventing problems are all discussed with a lactation professional. Your support person is encouraged to come with you.

Baby Care Basics

This class will explain to expectant parents and caregivers the basics of newborn care. Topics will include bathing, diapering, holding, when to call the doctor, immunizations, baby care needs and transitioning to your new role as a parent.

The Happiest Baby on the Block

New babies are such a blessing, but they can also bring with them sleepless nights, crying and sometimes quite a bit of extra stress. Learn an extraordinary approach to keeping your baby happy. In our Happiest Baby class, new parents will learn step-by-step how to help their baby sleep better and how to soothe even the fussiest baby in minutes–even seconds!

A parent kit, which includes “The Happiest Baby on the Block” VHS or DVD, along with a Soothing Sounds CD, will be available for an additional $20.

Prepared Childbirth (Lamaze) - Weekday

This four-week series is essential for all first– time expectant mothers and their partners. These classes will prepare you and your partner for labor and delivery by explaining special exercises, relaxation techniques and other important birthing information. It is highly recommended that you schedule your Prepared Childbirth classes, before your fourth month of pregnancy. You should come dressed in comfortable and/or stretchy clothing such as leggings or sweats, and bring a blanket, two pillows, a notebook and pen. Please register for classes early in your pregnancy, as classes fill quickly. You may bring one support person. The fee for each additional support person is $15.

Fee: Pre-registration required; $85 for couples delivering at Methodist Hospital, $95 for others.

This two-day class covers exactly the same material as the English weekday series, with the exception of Tot CPR for Family and Friends. (Does Not Include Tot CPR)

Prepared Childbirth (Lamaze) Refresher

This class is designed as a review course for couples who have already given birth and are familiar with Lamaze techniques.

TOT CPR for Family and Friends - English

This course is designed for those who want to learn the basics of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for infants and children. Child safety and baby-proofing your home are discussed. Certified instructors use guidelines set forth by The American Heart Association. This class is designed for parents, grandparents and others who care for an infant or child.

Fee: Pre-registration required; $15 per person
