Free Prostate Screenings at Methodist Hospital September 21
Arcadia (Sept. 14, 2011) The Cancer Resource Center at Methodist Hospital will provide free prostate screenings 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 21, in the cardiac rehabilitation center.
Appointments are required. To schedule an appointment time, call 626-574-3515. The hospital is located at 300 West Huntington Drive in Arcadia.
Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer (besides skin cancer) found in American men. The American Cancer Society believes that health care professionals should discuss the pros and cons of prostate cancer testing (PSA blood test and digital rectal examination) beginning at age 50, with men who have at least a 10-year life expectancy.
Men at high risk, such as African-Americans and those who have a first-degree relative (father, brother or son) diagnosed with prostate cancer at an early age (younger than 65), should begin the discussion at age 40. The goal of early detection is to find the cancer early so that it can be treated more effectively.
Men who are being followed by a urologist or who have been treated for prostate cancer are not eligible for this screening.
