Methodist Hospital History
Methodist Hospital is a 460 bed facility located in Arcadia, California. The hospital was founded in 1903 in Los Angeles by the Women's Home Missionary Society of the Methodist Church. Methodist Hospital began serving the community with only five beds in a two story house on Hewitt Street. Later, funds were raised to relocate the hospital from the Hewitt Street location to the former mayor's residence on Hope Street where the bed capacity expanded to 18. It was an ideal location for the growing hospital since it was said to be "just far enough out for quiet, just close enough in for convenience."
The house was temporarily used to care for 18 inpatients until a 100 bed facility was completed in May, 1915. The hospital and its leaders continued to further expand Methodist Hospital on Hope Street until it reached a bed capacity of 225 with many modern technologies throughout its facility.
Thanks to strong leadership, Methodist Hospital survived the difficult time of the depression. However, the post-war period brought significant changes in the needs of the community and rather than closing the hospital, Methodist Hospital moved to Arcadia. The hospital relocated in 1957.
