Volunteer Opportunities



Methodist Hospital offers a variety of services and locations for those who want to volunteer.

ADMITTING/REGISTRATION DESK: Volunteers will assist with transporting and discharge of patients and visitors by wheelchair, provide walking escort. Deliver and pickup paperwork from various departments, including the admitting department. Volunteers will assist with the deliver of flowers and e-mails to patient rooms. You need to be able to withstand long periods of walking.

COMFORT CARE MEDICAL/SURGICAL UNITS: Volunteer must be able to visit with patients, offering items such as magazines, newspaper, books, pillows, etc.; read to patients, refill water pitchers or assist them with the television system, and meals trays. You will provide families with directions and help discharge patients by wheelchair and run errands for staff.

COURTESY SHUTTLE DRIVER: Shuttle driver will transport patients, visitors and employees to and from the parking lots. They will also shuttle for special events. Good public relations, communications and judgment skills required. Must be at least 18 years of age with proof of a current California driver’s license.

EMERGENCY ROOM: Assist the emergency department staff by communicating with patients and families, running errands, giving directions to service areas of the hospital, assisting with transportation of patients and other duties as requested by the ED staff. Volunteer must be able to handle crisis in a calm manner. Must be at least 18 years of age.

GIFT SHOP: Volunteers greet and assist customers with purchases. Operate cash register. Restock candy, soft drink and magazine display. Excellent customer service skills are required.

HOSPITALITY/COFFEE CART: Volunteer will provide coffee service to families in various waiting rooms and patients throughout the hospital. Long periods of walking/standing required.

INFORMATION DESK: Greet visitors and issue visitors/vendor badge. Direct visitors to various locations within the hospital. Excellent customer service and phone skills required.

MARKETING/PUBLIC RELATIONS: Assist with mailings, placing document in binders, and photocopying. Make phone calls and take phone messages, as needed. Alphabetize documents, file and distribute brochures and promotions around hospital. Computer data input, as needed.

MUSIC: Bring soothing music by piano, violin, etc., to patients, visitors and families. Performances will be in the hospital lobby.  Must furnish own musical instrument. Baby grand piano is available in lobby.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH:  Filing paperwork, copying reports and other duties as request by staff.

PET THERAPY/VISITATION: Specially trained volunteers and their dogs visit with patients in many different units of the hospital.  The teams will visit with patients and families to provide positive bedside visits with therapy dogs. Teams must be certified through The Delta Society, Pet Therapy International or Therapy Dogs Inc., before attending hospital training.

SPECIAL EVENTS/FUNRAISING: Assist in supportive opportunities through service to the Methodist Hospital Foundation.

SPIRITUAL CARE: Assist in visiting patients and offering support to chaplains.

SURGERY WAITING ROOM: Visit with families and assist with directions and provide general hospital information. Volunteer will update families on patient’s progress, answer phone and provide coffee.

TELEPHONE AMBASSADOR:  Telephone Ambassadors will make calls on behalf of the Annual Giving Program within the Foundation.  Calls are designed to steward donors expressing thanks, gratitude and appreciation for the generous support provided by the individual/couples.  Volunteer must be comfortable speaking on the telephone, have a clear voice and be a good listener.

VOLUNTEER OFFICE: Greet visitors and answer phones. Provide information regarding volunteer opportunities. Assist with mailings, filing, photocopying, and alphabetizing. Provide clerical duties as requested by the volunteer office staff. Volunteer will assist with providing directions to families. Knowledge of Excel and Word. Excellent customer service and phone skills required.
